Due to Samsung’s plan to roll out new LED-lit liquid-crystal display TVs in December after nearly half a year of suspension to clear its stock of CCFL TVs, Taiwan Unity Opto Technology, the major TV backlights supplier to Samsung and LG, schedules its revenue with an estimated NT$12 billion (US$400 million), to soar 70% in 2011 over 2010, aiming to control over 10% of the world market for LED backlights.
According to Unity executives, with South Korean and Japanese manufacturers intended to deliver 70-80 million 32-inch LED-backlit LCD TVs, LED-lit TVs will took around sixty percentages in the whole TVs rolled out by them.
Unity’s other major revenue earner are backlights for laptops, estimated to win the company a 15% market share in 2011. However, Nichia and Toyoda Gosei have long dominated the market of LED backlights for laptops, Unity’s market share to a meager 1%.
Looking ahead , Unity will double outputs in 2011 at its Taiwan and China mainland factories , to 500 million LED packages a month to cope with a brisk market in 2011.
